Description:

Clara & Robert: The Schumann Story

The Schuman Story, Ingrid

Opera Theatre Company celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great composer, Robert Schumann with an intimate evening with Clara, his wife, companion and muse.

Starring award winning actor Ingrid Craigie as the strength behind his genius, we are guided through her tumultuous journey with Robert, interspersed with some of the greatest love songs ever written. We join Clara from the beginning, their youthful illicit romance, through to the height of their love when their creative partnership resulted in great compositions for piano and orchestra, and finally to the agony of separation and her resolve to promote his legacy.

Clara & Robert: The Schumann Story was especially commissioned by Opera Theatre Company and features talented mezzo-soprano Imelda Drumm and baritone Julian Hubbard performing Schumann's finest Lieder with piano accompaniment by David Bremner.

OTC has worked closely with the Office of Public Works to present opera in some of Ireland's most beautiful and interesting locations. In 2009, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Handel's death, OTC presented Handel's opera Acis & Galatea at Kilkenny Castle. The company is delighted to be able to build on this relationship this year by staging three performances of Clara & Robert: The Schumann Story in magnificent OPW settings - Castletown House, Farmleigh House and Rathfarnham Castle.

In addition to these venues OTC are also travelling to an impressive array of atmospheric settings; The chq building, Dublin, Anaverna House in Dundalk, St. George's Church in Belfast, The National Gallery Dublin, Borris House, Borris, Co. Carlow and the Norman Gallery in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.

This will be the first time OTC has partnered with the Dublin Docklands and the company is very excited to be playing in the chq building, which blends a strong historical resonance with a contemporary urban vitality. Originally built as a tobacco store with vaults beneath to store wine and designed by the Scot John Rennie. everything about the chq building is unusual. It is one of the few dockland warehouses protected under the Planning Acts. It is steeped in local history and traditionally locals knew it as the ‘Banquet Hall' because it was the venue for one of the great social events of the mid-nineteenth century, the Crimean War banquet.

Future plans for Opera Theatre Company include a national tour of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro visiting 11 venues during May, followed by a revival of the critically acclaimed Alcina in July, which is traveling to Buxton Festival for three performances and finally to round off the year there will be a tour of Frid's The Diary of Anne Frank in the Autumn.

With only eight performances of Clara & Robert: The Schumann Story and with extremely limited tickets, please book early to catch this enchanting performance.
